It is important to know your options when it comes to parental controls. With all of the inappropriate content available to children online, on TV, and elsewhere, it is important to have safeguards in place. It is impossible to monitor everything your kids are exposed to (at school, with their friends) but you can control what content they see on Television and the Internet. You can also do a pretty good job of monitoring what kind of music they listen to offline, most cd's will have content ratings for parents to take advantage of. If you have digital cable or satellite, it is pretty much standard for them to come with a parental control feature for people that have children. For TV, you can usually access the parental control panel by using the menu, reading the manual that came with your equipment, or you can even call your provider and ask them how to configure the parental control. You can usually set them to block all X rated content, R rated content, and sometimes down to tv-14 and pg-13. Pg-13 is usually satisfies most parents, but it is even possible to allow access only to PG rated material if desired. On the internet there are several different ways to block content.
Usually the operating system on a computer will have built in parental controls, and the effectiveness of the controls will depend on which operating system you use, and also which version of a particular operating system. There are other programs you can purchase (perhaps you could find one for free as well) that will allow you to further protect your child from inappropriate content. You can ever purchase programs that will allow you to monitor and record everything that your child does online. You can look at their chat room logs, IM sessions, what websites they have visited, and more. There are many available options out there to help you protect your children. All you need to do is learn which are best ones for you, and how to use them.
